Province-wide clean, green contest recognizes LGUs' pro-envi efforts

Strengthening its "NariMATT nga Aglawlaw" environmental awareness campaign, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte headed by Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc awarded the outstanding cities, municipalities, barangays, and schools through its province-wide search for "Cleanest and Greenest" last December 9 at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena, Laoag City.

The search aims to recognize the efforts of the local government units (LGUs) in managing the environment and promoting the Ilokanos' participation in community development.

"The waste management related project is one of the topmost Provincial Government agenda. This is to instill awareness, learning, and discipline to the citizenry as well as to ensure the improvement of public health and our environment," Mrs. Estrella Sacro, Environment and Natural Resources Office project head, said.

Participating entities were evaluated from November 5 to 27 this year.

The City of Laoag won the "Cleanest and Greenest" award for the city-level while the town of San Nicolas garnered first place for the municipal level. Each LGU received Php 250,000 cash prize.

Under the municipal level, the second placer (Pagudpud) was awarded with cash prize amounting to Php 200,000 while the third placer (Burgos) brought home Php 100,000. 

Other winners of this year's search for "Cleanest and Greenest" contest were: (barangay level) Brgy. Caparispisan, Pagudpud, champion; Brgy. Poblacion, Burgos, first runner-up; Brgy. Gabut Norte, Badoc, second runner-up; (school level) Maan-anteng National High School of Solsona, champion; Alipio Ignacio Memorial Elementary School of Laoag City, first runner-up; Barong Elementary School of Dingras, second runner-up. 

Minor awards given were Best Public Market (Laoag City), Best Slaughter House (San Nicolas), Best Cemetery (Piddig), Best Public Park (Bangui), and Best Rural Health Unit (Solsona).

San Nicolas (municipal level) and Brgy. Caparispisan, Pagudpud (barangay level) obtained the Outstanding Solid Waste Management Plan Implementation Award; San Nicolas (municipal level), Brgy. Poblacion, Burgos (barangay level), Barong Elementary School, Dingras (school level) got the Environmental Management and Sustainability Award; while South Central Pagudpud was the Best Anti-Plastic Implementer.

With a vision of a "greener" Ilocos Norte, Governor Marcos Manotoc emphasized his thrust towards a cleaner environment and more responsible community through incentivizing the LGUs and schools to sustain their exemplar performance in terms of cleanliness.

"I am hoping that we can do all our part whether it is a simple segregation and picking up after ourselves... Magiging twice a year na itong contest and I hope that all of you will continue to participate and push each other to clean up our province, ensuring a safer and more livable province for all of our kailian," Governor Marcos Manotoc remarked.
