PGIN, MMMH&MC set up indoor park for pedia-cancer patients

Jan. 19, 2021 ...

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) has assembled an indoor playground for pediatric oncology patients at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) to create a safe place where young patients can live their childhood despite their health conditions.

Dr. Maria Lourdes Otayza, MMMH&MC's Medical Center Chief, shared that Governor Manotoc was inspired to assist the pediatric oncology patients when he attended the "Arapaap: A Child's Dream Photography Exhibit and Fashion Show," a fundraising activity held at San Nicolas Robinsons Mall last year.

"We invited the Governor at the launching, so he learned of the [Arapaap] project. He commended it. Then we explained the reason why we did Arapaap. It is unfair, we said. The children are sick, and they lost out on that experience. After hearing that, he offered to donate a playground," Dr. Otayza narrated.

Most of the Hematology-Oncology Clinic clients were pediatric and done outpatient basis. This prompted the children to wait long hours in a queue.

"What is going to force them to get out of the bed? Will they be happy to come to the hospital again? So we have to give them something positive here in the hospital," she added.

At present, PGIN and MMMH&MC are arranging a date for the official opening of the playground installation.

"We all see that [indoor playground] as a symbol of the Governor's concern for us, for the community, and the priorities of health. We are very reassured that he has our back whatever project we will embark on to improve the health of the community. Lubos-lubos ang aming pasasalamat," Dr. Otayza ended.

Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc has been known for his commitment to expanding the health system in the province. Also, in his three-year service as a Senior Board Member, his legislations were primarily geared towards youth welfare and development.
