Normal rainfall condition ahead in Ilocos Norte— PAGASA

Jun. 23, 2021 ...

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecasted normal rainfall conditions in Ilocos Norte starting July to November this year.

According to Engr. Cynthia Iglesia, Chief Meteorological Officer of PAGASA-DOST Ilocos Norte, the amount of rainfall in Ilocos Norte during June is below usual, but normal rainfall will persist from July through November.

"Walang abnormality sa climate forecast natin sa mga susunod na buwan. Nasa neutral phase tayo ng El Niño–Southern Oscillation kaya hindi natin mararanasan ang La Niña. Asahan lang natin ang malalakas na pag-ulan pagdating ng July at August," Engr. Iglesia remarked.

She further explained that heavy rains brought by enhanced Southwest Monsoon or typhoons are necessary to replenish groundwater in Ilocos Norte, which was severely depleted last year due to below-average rainfall.

On the other hand, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council (PDRRMRC) has started mobilizing local counterparts to reinforce rainy season preparedness measures and flood mitigation control operations in various local government units.

More importantly, Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc has directed local chief executives to establish alternative evacuation centers separate from their COVID-19 isolation facilities. Underscoring that these must be well-equipped to comply with the minimum health protocols such as social distancing, wearing of facemask, and establishment of a triage station.
