Ilocos Norte to showcase ‘sports tourism’ potential thru staging Nat’l Chess Championship Finals

Apr. 01, 2016 ...

With its vibrant tourism industry, Ilocos Norte will host the National Chess Championship Grand Finals on April 2-8, 2016, once again showcasing the ‘sports tourism’ potential of Ilocos Norte.

According to Provincial Sports Consultant Faivo P. Bartolome, Ilocos Norte may have been chosen to host the event’s finals for its booming tourism industry. During this year’s Holy Week, Ilocos Norte welcomed more than 400,00 day tourists.

“Many of the participants, currently estimated at 168, belong to the 10 – 20 years old age bracket, so most probably they will be accompanied by their parents,” he added, noting that the participants and parents will not only be coming to Ilocos Norte for the games but also to get the chance to visit the famous attractions in the province.

In the past years, Governor Imee R. Marcos has been on the forefront of actively pushing Ilocos Norte to host major sporting events like the Paoay Lake International Regatta which is participated by international delegates from Indonesia, Hong Kong United Kingdom, Australia among others.

The chess finals also coincides with the recently concluded Tri Ilocos Norte, a triathlon series that highlights the province’s major tourist sites like the UNESCO World Heritage Paoay Church, the majestic Paoay Lake and the rock formations of Currimao town.

During the one-week competition, Ilocanos will get the chance to see Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre, the “Asia’s First Grandmaster” as well as witness Mhage Sebastian, the young Ilocano from Pasuquin town, in playing live.
