Gov Marcos Manotoc pledges continuing support to Ilocos Norte IPs

Oct. 28, 2020 ...

In celebration of the 2020 National Indigenous Peoples (IPs) Month and commemoration of the 23rd Anniversary of the IP Rights Act (IPRA), the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Ilocos Norte Provincial Office organized a summit at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena, Laoag City, last October 26.

With the theme "Correcting Historical Injustices for the IPs' Rights and Welfare," the event was attended by IP Mandatory Representatives, IP Organizations, and some members of Indigenous Cultural Communities hailing from the municipalities of Adams, Dumalneg, Nueva Era, Carasi, Vintar, Pagudpud, Bangui, and Marcos. Mayors Rosalia Dupagen of Adams and Lairvee Espiritu of Dumalneg were also present.

Speaking in front of members of Ilocos Norte's Cultural Communities, Gov. Marcos Manotoc remarked:

"Sana naman ay hindi lang tayo once a year magkita-kita. We would like to find ways to further help you. Minsan mahirap po ang pumunta sa inyo kasi malayo po kayoSana we can alternate, pupunta kami sa inyo at minsan kayo rin po dito at mag usap-usap lang po tayo."

Among Gov. Marcos Manotoc's initiatives at the start of his term was creating  a Provincial Inter-agency Committee, through Executive Order No. 21-19, to ensure the delivery of basic health services to Indigenous Peoples and Cultural Communities in Ilocos Norte.

"Suggestion ni Senator Imee Marcos na dapat ayusin ang posisyon ng mga IPs sa Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP). Dapat may IP head sa SP. I am hoping na mas maganda po ang communication natin para malaman ko po kung ano ang kailangan po ninyo, moving forward," he continued.

Moreover, Gov. Marcos Manotoc also participated in the IPRA discussion and the community dance, showing solidarity among all Ilocos Norte communities.

"You are one with us and we are one with you. Kulang po ang Ilocos Norte without our very treasured Indigenous Peoples. We thank you and we honor you," he ended.
