Ilocos Norte's La Milagrosa Provincial Fiesta will officially open tomorrow, April 28, with a light show at the Provincial Capitol to be followed by the evening gown portion of the Miss Ilocos Norte Pageant.

"We've put together a theme that's celebrating our rich culture, tradition, and heritage," said Ilocos Norte Tourism Office (INTO) Head Ianree B. Raquel, "and at the same time rekindles our past as a province and looks forward to upcoming celebrations."

Ilocos Norte will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos (FEM) this September; 2018 will also mark the province's 200thfoundation anniversary.

"But of course, the main focus is honoring the provincial patroness, La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc."

Award-winning lights and sounds director Voltaire de Jesus returned to design the second installment of the Capitol Light Show.

De Jesus is known as the person behind Ayala Land's "Festival of Lights" in Makati City, Metro Manila.

The show, which will run at a 30-minute interval from seven to 11 o'clock in the evening until May 21, will feature Ilocano folk songs like "Pamulinawen" and "Naslag a Virgen," as well as more contemporary songs like the official La Milagrosa Fiesta song and "Tan-ok ni Ilocano."

In view of Marcos' centenary, it will also include the song "Bagong Lipunan."

Evening gown competition continues upliftment of abel fabric

Following the first run of the 2017 light show, the 23 candidates of the Miss Ilocos Norte Pageant will show off their evening gowns, also at the Provincial Capitol.

"They'll be using [gowns] with inabel," Raquel shared, "we encouraged our designers to continue using the heritage fabric."

In addition to keeping the pageant "proudly Ilocano," featuring the abel or loom-woven material will also help boost its popularity and thus the livelihood of local weavers.

Meanwhile, the terno night of the Miss Ilocos Norte candidates will take place on May 6 following the La Milagrosa Mass and Procession in Laoag City.

A one-piece long dress with butterfly sleeves, the terno was highly popularized by Former Firstlady Imelda Marcos, wife of FEM.

The pageant will then culminate on May 16 at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena in Laoag City.
