Apr. 01, 2016 ...

The world’s multi-awarded chess player also known as “Asia’s first Grandmaster” Eugenio Torre will grace the National Age Group Chess Championship Grand Finals on April 2-8, 2016 at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.

Grandmaster Torre is renowned for winning the silver medal in the 1974 Chess Olympiad held in Nice, France which tagged him the said title at the age of 22.

He will lead the 168 players from different regions of the country in a chess exhibition slated on the first day.

The competition will then kick-off at the Mariano Marcos State University-College of Teacher Education. It is divided into the following age group categories: under eight years old (U8), under 10 years (U10), under 12 years (U12), under 14 years (U14), under 16 years (U16) and under 20 years old (U20).

The event will be hosted by the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte in partnership with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, Philippine Olympic Committee and Philippine Sports Commission.

Provincial Sports Consultant Faivo Bartolome eyes the event as an opportunity to inspire the Ilocano youth in the field and thus urged enthusiasts to witness the weeklong event.

One of the participants is Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian, who hails from Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and a Gold Medalist at the 16th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship.

Governor Imee Marcos has always shown support to Ilocano youth who excel in sports as well as academics, leadership and culture and arts.

Last February 2016, she led the ‘Sirib Youth Awards,’ an event which recognized young Ilocanos, including Sebastian, who brought prestige to the province through their participation in various national and international competitions.

Moreover, she believes that the conduct of the National Age Group Chess Championship in the province will further motivate Ilocano youth to unleash their potential in the field and bring honor to Ilocos Norte through their world-class talents and skills.
