Prov'l resiliency council to conduct 2nd qtr nat'l earthquake drill in PaoayJun 17, 2019
In observance of the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED), the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency Council (PDRRMRC) is expecting 500 participants in the second quarter earthquake drill at Paoay National High School (PNHS), on June 20, at exactly 2:00 p.m.
Objective of the drill is to "test the overall efficiency and usefulness of the preparedness, response, and recovery plans; systems of existing policy and protocols" in localities.
"We usually conduct earthquake drills in barangays, schools, and malls since these places have the most number of people. In this way, we strengthen the training of our kailians regarding earthquake preparedness, including in similar situations," Mr. Marcell Tabije of PDRRMRC said.
He added that the PDRRMRC is focusing on educating residents in coastal areas since they are more vulnerable to threats of tsunami in the event of massive earthquakes.
The drill will begin with the ceremonial pressing of button followed by the demonstration of "duck, cover, and hold" technique, and other evacuation procedures, and emergency response. Afterwards, the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), the Provincial Health Office (PHO), the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office (INPPO), and the Bureau of Fire Prevention (BFP) will conduct a post-evaluation on the level of preparedness of the municipality.
Tabije then urges all local government units to join the national drill. He hopes this drill may reduce casualties during disaster and make the province more prepared and safe.
Last February 21, during the first quarter NSED, Civil Defense Officer Elvis Quitalig lauded the remarkable preparedness of the Municipality of Bacarra as the pilot area in Region 1.
Next schedule of the quarterly NSED will be on August 8 and November 14.
