Over 84.5k books distributed in 18 towns, 2 citiesNov 15, 2018
The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) through the Provincial Education Department (PED), turned over a total of 84,563 books to different public elementary schools (ES) in Ilocos Norte last November 13, at the Centennial Arena, Laoag City.
According to Ms. Matilde Nery, officer-in-charge of the PED, these materials are to supplement the first batch of books that were distributed last September to schools damaged by and flooded during Typhoon "Ompong."
"We decided to buy additional books, kasi ang target is one book per pupil," she said.
In particular, 4,548 books were turned over to ES in the town of Bacarra; 4,637 in Badoc; 2,867 in Bangui; 3,217 in Banna; 1,691 in Burgos; 1,676 in Currimao; 6,234 in Dingras; 3,010 in Marcos; 1,530 in Nueva Era; 4,404 in Pagudpud; 3,577 in Paoay; 4,122 in Pasuquin; 3581 in Piddig; 2419 in Pinili; 5,033 in San Nicolas; 3,477 in Sarrat; 3, 684 in Solsona; and 4,573 in Vintar.
Meanwhile, schools in Laoag City and the City of Batac received a total of 15,091 and 5,197 books, respectively.
Nery mentioned that the number of books turned over was based on the data from the Department of Education (DepEd).
"Ang bilang ng librong ibinigay sa mga school ay hindi magkakapareho. Ibinatay ito sa bilang ng mga estudyante noong nakaraang enrolment na nakuha namin sa DepEd. Yun yung basis for acquisition of materials," she added.
Last September 25-26, a week after "Ompong had struck Ilocos Norte, the PED distributed more than twenty thousand reading materials to different public ES in the province.
