Over 22k livestock to be distributed as "Ompong" reliefDec 29, 2019
In a bid to ensure continued assistance to calamity-stricken and disadvantaged families through providing sustainable income-generating opportunities, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), in partnership with the Department of Agriculture–Regional Field Office I (DA-RFOI), will distribute over 22,000 livestock assistance to 12,650 rice farmers who were severely affected by Typhoon "Ompong" last September 2018.
From the said number, almost 270 were already distributed to farmers and livestock raisers of the Municipality of Solsona, last December 11.
"Ito ang request ni Senator Imee R. Marcos noon sa DA Region– to assist the rice farmers who were badly damaged by Typhoon 'Ompong," Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Loida Valenzuela said.
Moreover, beneficiaries of the animal dispersal program were selected according to these criteria: 1) the beneficiary must come from a heavily-flooded area; and 2) the beneficiary could no longer recover his/her capital.
"Unti-unti nating ibibigay ang mga hayop sa mga beneficiaries. Sa ngayon, nakiki-coordinate kami sa DA Region kung kailan ang isahang distribution ng mga livestock. Depende rin kasi sa availability ng supplier at sa transportation condition ng mga hayop," Dr. Valenzuela explained.
The farm animals which will be distributed to Ilokano farmers include goats, sheep, ducks, and free-range chickens.
On September 14, 2018, Typhoon "Ompong" battered Ilocos Norte resulting in more than P 1.9 billion damages in agriculture alone. Ilokano farmers were greatly affected since 9,000 hectares of farmland had been totally damaged, while over 39,000 were partially damaged.
