As preparations are underway for the influx of tourists this upcoming summer, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) is set to open a weekend market for the season highlighting the products of local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Ilocos Norte Tourism Office (INTO) Head Aianree Raquel revealed that the market will open on March 25 to 27, in-time for the Holy Week which has previously recorded an influx of tourists last year at more than 350,000.
He further noted that the weekend market will run for five consecutive weekends during the summer season at the Ilocos Norte Dap-Ayan.
Aside from offering local entrepreneurs a venue to promote their products, the weekend market will also give tourists the opportunity to handpick various Ilocano handicrafts, artisanal items and products in a convenient location.
Ilocano products in-demand among tourists like abel (woven) products, sukang Iloco, bugnay and duhat wine, tupig (rice cake), rice coffee, bawang(garlic), among others will be up for purchase, according to INTO.
Moreover, the Bakers and Restaurant Association of Ilocos Norte will also set up several food kiosks during the scheduled weekend market which will showcase the best of Ilocos Norte’s gastronomic tourism.
Governor Imee R. Marcos has actively shown support to the development of the SMEs in the province by providing them loans to boost their businesses as she firmly believes that the sector is beneficial to the economic growth and transformation of the province.
In the past, the provincial government led the development initiatives for local entrepreneurs through events like the Ilocos Norte Food and Trade Exposition and the Ilocos Norte’s participation in International Food Exposition and Manila Furnishings and Apparel Manufacturer’s Exchange.
