Coronation of provincial patronesses highlights Ilocos Norte's fiesta

Jun 01, 2018 ...

The Pontifical Coronation of La Virgen Milagrosa, patron saint of Ilocos Norte, highlighted the province's month-long fiesta yesterday, May 31, 2018, at the St. John the Baptist Church, Badoc.

Popularly known as La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc, Puon ti Ragsakmi (Cause of our Joy), the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin was led by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, representing His Holiness Pope Francis.

The Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) popularized the devotion of Ilocanos to La Milagrosa through Provincial Ordinance No. 062-2012, declaring May 2 to 5 of every year as Provincial Fiesta of Ilocos Norte in honor of La Virgen Milagrosa, the Patron Saint of the Province.

Moreover, as part of the Fiesta, the month-long "La Virgen Milagrosa Joyful Symphony of Lights," a lights-and-music display at the Provincial Capitol, is a tribute to the patroness.

The Pontifical Crown of the Blessed Virgin features stylized ocean waves and inspired by the buttresses of St. Augustine Church in Paoay and St. John the Baptist Church in Badoc. The Crown's vertical band depicts Ilocos garlic, tobacco leaves and flowers, and bado-badoc grass, after which the Town of Badoc was named.

It was designed by international visual artist Mr. Noli Principe Manalang and ecclesiastical jewelry-maker, Mr. Rouel Dionisio.

Preceding the Coronation was a nine-day novena, sponsored by local government units (LGUs), which started last May 22, and a fluvial procession last May 26 at the La Virgen Milagrosa Chapel and Cove in  Brgy. La Virgen Milagrosa, Badoc.

The PGIN also sponsored a state dinner last May 30 with Cardinal Tagle, local church officials led by Bishop Renato Mayugba of the Diocese of Laoag City, local government officials, members of the media, and the private sector.

Cardinal Tagle remarked: "The pontifical coronation is the recognition of the people's faith in the Lord and the recognition of the Blessed should lead to a living out of the faith.

"Sana po ay isabuhay natin ang milagro ng ating mahal na Ina, Virgen Milagrosa at magsilbing tagapaghatid ng kasiyahan sa ibang tao," he added.

Last December 2017, the Congregation of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments approved the petition for the Pontifical Coronation of La Virgen Milagrosa through the issuance of a Papal Decree.
