Boosting its support to young local talents, the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN) launched the inaugural "Balikas: Search for Ilocos Norte's New Event Hosts."
20 finalists were picked to be part of its new roster: Aldrin Sojourner Gamayon, Aaron Sandler Guillermo, Lei Gee Lumen, Ira Shalini Ybañez, Moyrah Shaina Colobong, Marr Angelo Nicolas, Allen King Aquino, Azhlyn Mangapit, Daniel Ross Velasco, Kyla Balaba, Lucky Charm Arce, Elmer K. Santiago Jr., Enzy Yvonne Cuyo, Janderick Dancel, Antonio Benjamin Sapaden III, Justine Asuncion, Joelo Ramirez, Edine Pasion, Dan Balantac, and Bianca Tamayo.
As a former Senior Board Member with notable resolutions and ordinances anchored on the holistic youth development, Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc continues to strengthen his bid for a more "creative" province through this initiative.
Spearheaded by the Ilocos Norte Tourism (INTO), the finalists went through a series of selection process.
"You are all equally lucky to have this rare opportunity—a dream for so many of us and a way to explore and polish your talents. This puts you in a very privileged position," remarked Provincial Tourism Officer, Mr. Ian B. Raquel.
"You will work with a lot of recognized hosts, a community of artists, including people in events and production. I hope that you will thrive in this venture.
"This is a never ending process; take this opportunity really push yourselves," he added.
Moreover, last September 8 and 9, the "Balikas" hosts attended a two-day workshop. They trained under the tutelage of Mrs. Mary Jane Leaño for the fundamentals of hosting; Mrs. Luvee Hazel Aquino for scripting; Prof. Jeanette Gaoat for dealing with dead air, ad-libs and sound bites, Prof. Marlina Lino for the basics of English and Ilokano grammar; and Mr. Sherberk Cabrales for vocal dynamics.
"My experience was actually breathtaking because there were so many things I have learned; not only in the English language and hosting, but also in our Ilocano language," said Justine Kyle S. Asuncion, one of the "Balikas" finalists.
"I am looking forward to more experiences. I think this is just a start. I hope that the Provincial Government will give us more chances to explore new things," he expressed.
The "Balikas" hosts will headline provincial events such as the Marcos Fiesta, Semana ti Ar-aria Halloween Bash, and Kinni-kinni Women's Month Celebration, among others.
